The Course is channelled material designed to facilitate awakening from this dream of separation from God. Its essence is that the separation never really occurred, and that the perceived world is illusory. We are dreaming of exile, whilst all the time at home in God.
The channelling came about when an American psychologist (William Thetford) announced that he was tired of the angry and aggressive feelings that were going on between members of staff, and concluded that there must be another way.
Preceeded by highly symbolic dreams, the channelling began through Helen
Schucman, Thetford’s colleague, when she wrote “This is a Course
in Miracles”. The voice she heard made no sound but seemed to give her
a rapid inner dictation.
She soon realised that this was a special assignment that she had somehow
agreed to take on. It took over seven years to complete.
It’s a self study system, contained within a three-volume book whose
teachings lie at the core of all the world's religions. Practical application
of its principles, which focus mainly on forgiveness, are suggested on a daily
basis, have the potential to transform the mind...
The Course states that a Universal theology is impossible, but a universal experience is not only possible but necessary. Although Christian in statement, the course deals with universal spiritual themes.
